Riverboat Wine Voyages S3, Australia

Description

Taste over 50 wines over a series of 10 'voyages', as we explore the famous and the up-and-coming wine regions of the world! Now in its third season, the Riverboat's Wine Voyages gives you the opportunity to learn more about wine whilst enjoying it with friends in a fun and social atmosphere on board Singapore's very own floating F&B and lifestyle venue.

Begin with a welcome sparkling wine and tostada chips. Once everyone is settled in, listen to a short presentation on the day's featured country/region by our guest wine specialist Akimi Yeo, followed by a guided tasting sequence of 4-5 other wines. Feel free to share your thoughts along the way, and ask questions anytime along the journey.

THIS VOYAGE: AUSTRALIA

A globally popular new-world wine producer, Australia is certainly a crowd favourite among Singaporean wine consumers. Typically bright and cheerful, and with lively fruitiness and good alcohol content, Australian wine is well-suited to the warm climate we enjoy (or suffer) here in Singapore.

For the more discerning drinker, what sets Australia apart from certain other new-world wine countries is that it largely avoids the ‘we specialize in everything everywhere’ mentality, and each region focuses on a couple of key grape varietals best suited to their growing conditions. On this voyage, we will be tasting 5 different wines that best showcase their region of origin. But first, let us kick off with a bubbly.

Banrock Station Sparkling White Shiraz NV

Starting with the whites, though Chardonnay is by far the most widely planted white grape in Australia, we feel that what is more worth tasting is the Semillon of Hunter Valley, a rather hot and humid region North of Sydney made suitable for winegrowing by cool afternoon sea breezes, and the Rieslings of Clare and Eden Valleys down south.

Moving on to the reds, Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsular on the outskirts of Melbourne are some of the cooler regions of Australia, and thus suited to the princessy Pinot Noir. Over on the west side of Australia just south of Perth, we find Margaret River which is very popular for whites, but we discovered an amazing Cab-Merlot which to us outshines their Chardonnays – come taste and see if you agree! And finally, a tasting of Australia cannot be complete without a Shiraz, and for that we will sail on down south near Adelaide to McLaren Vale, which together with Barossa Valley produces outstanding Shiraz.

There’s so much more to try in this amazing country, but alas, that’s all we can squeeze into one voyage. Perhaps we will have a chance to try some Rutherglen Muscat or Tasmanian wines in a future session!
